How Media, Business & Government Lie and Spread Psychological Warfare
systematic disinformation plays such a large role in what we see, how we react, spend our money and who we end up voting for. The control, manipulation, distortion and outright fabrication of information are crucial to the smooth operation of the machinery of war and power.

Hugo Chavez, the next boogeyman?
05.21.06 (10:02 pm)   [edit]
A tough, popular socialist president of an oil-rich Central American country, Hugo Chavez is getting some mixed reviews in the US media. He's survived one attempted military coup already. The poor of his country are solidly behind him, because he has been able to deliver measurable improvements to the quality of life, as well as NBA basketball to Venezuelan TV viewers. The Shrub doesn't like him. We seem to either use covert action and right-wing terror (i.e. the Iran Contra affair) or outright war (like Noreiga's "arrest") and the whole Beavis Bush and Saddam Butthead show, American boys rocking into battle in tank and helicopters to the sound of Drowning Pool "Let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor..." Hugo Chavez seems to be getting ready for a fight, making massive weapons purchases, and recruiting a civilian homeguard from a ready and willing populace. He's not getting ready to invade anyone. He sees the writing on the wall. There's been nothng but one dumbass war after another as long as I can remember, starting with my little brother's birth in the middle of the "Cuban Missile Crisis". I'm 46, closing on 47 fast and things suck just as badly as ever. Violence is a function of authority. All violence is inherently authoritarian in nature, even the violence of "revolutionaries" and "anarchists". When the bombs and bullets start flying, the discussion is over, it's just everyone saying "because I said so" at the same time. They call Chavez a dictator. There is no question that he is tough and ruthless. Has history left him any other choice?
